Beyond Inclusion Tanzania contributed practical Tanzanian experience to the regional consultation and co-creation process for a CBR/CBID Centre of Excellence for Africa.

Beyond Inclusion Tanzania contributed to the regional consultation and co-creation process for establishing a Community-Based Rehabilitation and Community-Based Inclusive Development Centre of Excellence for Africa.

The initiative is led by Liliane Foundation in collaboration with the CBR Africa Network and other partners. It seeks to strengthen and institutionalise CBR/CBID as a preferred national strategy for disability inclusion and the realisation of the rights established under the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and the African Disability Protocol.

BIT contributed perspectives drawn from its practical experience implementing Community-Based Inclusive Development in Tanzania, including lessons on community-level delivery, engagement of Organisations of Persons with Disabilities, government collaboration, systems strengthening and sustainability.

As part of this engagement, BIT participated in individual consultations and was represented at the regional inception workshop held in Douala, Cameroon, from 24 to 26 March 2026. The workshop brought together CBR/CBID practitioners and stakeholders to shape the Centre’s objectives, governance, three-year plan and long-term sustainability model.

A Regional Platform for Knowledge and Innovation

The Centre of Excellence is envisioned not primarily as a physical institution, but as a coordinated regional mechanism for developing and promoting CBR/CBID knowledge, quality, innovation and good practice.

Its proposed areas of work include:

  • Cross-country learning, peer exchange and regional communities of practice.
  • Development of adaptable CBR/CBID tools, training materials and implementation guidance.
  • Establishment of a regional network of master trainers and technical experts.
  • Participatory research and testing of innovative approaches.
  • Advocacy for the integration of CBR/CBID into government systems, policies and budgets.
  • Collaboration among governments, Organisations of Persons with Disabilities, practitioners, researchers and development partners.

The initiative was informed by consultations with more than 100 stakeholders across Africa and beyond, including practitioners, OPDs, government representatives, NGOs, regional networks, academic institutions and technical experts.

Connecting Tanzania to Continental Learning

BIT’s participation ensures that experience from Tanzania contributes to the emerging continental CBR/CBID movement. It also creates opportunities for BIT and its partners to access regional expertise, practical tools, peer learning, research and future collaboration.

This engagement complements BIT’s continuing work to strengthen and institutionalise Community-Based Inclusive Development within Tanzania’s national and local systems.
